Training and Examining

Are you excited by the prospect of learning to fly but concerned about learning the theory that is required in order for you to pass the 9 theoretical knowledge exams in order to gain your PPL? If that’s the case then do not worry, we can help!

Studying whilst on your own learning from books or PDF slides suits some people, but not all. Sometimes theory is best taught verbally with someone explaining the subject “face to face”.

Eddie Lamb is a fully qualified CAA license flight instructor and examiner, as well as being a CAA ground school instructor and examiner with over thousands of hours of instruction behind him. He is also a fully qualified FAA CFII and MEI. Eddie is also the founder and owner of Academy Aviation, which is a CAA approved training organization, (ATO).

Academy Aviation is based at the historic airfield of North Weald, in Essex. It is here where the PPL(A) intensive theory course is held.

At Academy Aviation, we offer an intensive ground school where you can study with an experienced instructor over a 5 day period and sit those subjects in the same week.

Courses are offered where a small group of students attend and learn in a professional and friendly environment. These small groups allow maximum efficiency of “instruction to student ratio” where the students have more “one on one” time with the instructor than other schools with larger amounts of attendees and allows even more study support by students supporting each other, which in turn leads to a greater understanding of the subjects studied as well as making the whole learning experience more enjoyable.

Since starting the flying school, Eddie realized that one of the main concerns that prospective PPL(A) students tended to have, is the amount of study time that is perceived to be required in order to pass the theoretical knowledge exams, in order to help gain the coveted PPL(A).

He saw that most students relished the chance to get into the cockpit but less students to “get into” the books… He knew that he had to offer an alternative option for students to allow them to be able to learn all the relevant theoretical aspects for the PPL(A) over a much shorter period and also wanted to make this a more enjoyable experience.

“A lot of our students lead very busy lives. Some of our students are attending full time education. Some are working full time whilst also studying for university degrees etc. Others are running their families and or their own businesses. It became apparent to me that a lot of ‘self study’ students were having time management issues specifically relating to the studying for these PPL(A) theoretical exams.”

Eddie continues; “I Have always been happy to teach students regarding any aspect of PPL(A) theoretical training that the student asks me about on an ad-hoc basis. However, I realized that I could offer a more structured and appropriate solution by way of an intensive ground school course here at Academy Aviation at North Weald Airfield. Here at Academy Aviation, we like to teach in a way that the student understands. After all, we are not teaching our students just so they can pass the exams. We are teaching them so that they understand the relevant concepts involved, so that after passing the PPL(A), they will be safe, competent and content pilots.”

As well as offering “small” group courses, we also offer bespoke “one to one” courses for those that prefer to learn on an even more personal basis for whatever reason that may be.
